TGIF at Greads: Issue Books

  ||   Posted in Feature & Follow Friday   ||   5 comments

TGIF is a weekly meme hosted by Ginger @ GReads. Every Friday Ginger asks a question somehow related to reading or books or anything else bookish.

Issue Books: Which books have you found to be very rewarding when it comes to tackling tougher issues?

Some people love “real” stories with “real” issues. I tend to avoid the hard things in reading, because I read for pleasure. So I never went for the issues books but recently I became a bit more open to different kind of genres and I have to day that there are some pretty amazing issues books especially in for young adults.

I can’t say that I enjoyed reading Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma as this book ruptured my heart. It deals with the very sensitive topic of incest and interestingly enough after finishing the book I wasn’t even sure anymore who are the victims. This book is unbelievable powerful and painful to read.

I was also very surprised by Simone Elkeles’s Leaving Paradise. She is an amazing and very talented writer and manages to completely draw you into the story. The main characters are described in a way that you are sympathetic to all points of view and that you are equally torn who/what is right. Definitely a read to recommend.

I’ve not read Forbidden yet. Kind of scared of it. But I’ve read so much about it that someday I’ll have to…. Great ideas!

I’ve been meaning to read Forbidden, but never got around to doing it! Same for Leaving Paradise… but both those books are great choices!

I’ve just bought Forbidden because I was intrigued to read about incest; everyone says it is a heart-breaking book, and I’m so sensitive.. I’m sure I’m going to cry so much over that book :)

I read Forbidden a couple of months ago and the ending made my cry.
It was such a heartbreaking book, the type that leaves you feeling empty and sad whenever you think about it.
Although it’s probably not a book for the squeamish, it’s definitely a very powerful read.
Also, have you read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher? I borrowed it from the library about a week ago and finished it a few days ago. It deals with issues such as suicide, gossiping, bullying etc. and has become one of my favorite reads.
